Shoes and Clothes Project

Shoes and Clothes Project

Uganda has more than eight million orphans and high risk children.  That translates into nearly one out of every five children are classified as orphans and live in some type of group environment.  While food, water, medicine and shelter are obvious priorities… clothes and shoes are very much appreciated.  For donors who want to be more “hands on” with their assistance… this is a great opportunity to help.  Most orphanages, including the Good Care Children’s Ministry, have access to a reliable and fairly affordable post office.  For those who want to send clothes and shoes, you can do so at the address below.

The Education Project

The Education Project

Uganda has made significant progress in education, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.  In 1999, Uganda passed it’s Universal Primary Education initiative with the goal of offering free primary education to all residents.  This initiative effectively raised the number of primary school students from two million in 1986 to over six million in 1999.  Unfortunately, tripling the number of students in primary schools strained the system and many schools struggle to find supplies, maintain facilities and train teachers.  Theses problems are almost always magnified in Uganda’s most rural and poor regions.  It is for this reason that many international charities offer potential donors the opportunity to sponsor a needy child or orphan.  These sponsorships generally range from $175 per year for primary school students to $325 per year for secondary school students.  These sponsorships often provide for textbooks, school supplies, lunches and can even help open and maintain much needed schools in Uganda’s rural regions.

Currently, four out of five primary school age children are enrolled in educational programs.  That number drops off to only twenty percent for children thirteen and older. The latest figures suggest a teacher to pupil ratio of 1 to 48 for primary schools and 1 to 30 for secondary schools.  Our goal is increase the quality of the educational experience for all ages while encouraging older children to remain in school.

The Water Project

Uganda’s population  has experienced significant growth (3% per year) over the last 20 years due to it’s relative stability as compared to other African countries.  Unfortunately, this growth has pushed Uganda’s water and sanitation infrastructure to it’s limits.  Currently, it is estimated that between 38% and 61% of Ugandan’s residents (around 16 to 24 million people) lack access to clean water and nearly 75% do not have access to proper sanitation resources.

Surprisingly, Uganda has ample freshwater sources as rivers, lakes and wetlands cover almost twenty percent of it’s total surface area.  This includes Lake Victoria which is Africa’s largest lake.  Uganda’s average annual rainfall is 35 inches, which replenishes many of these water sources.  Thus the issue is not necessarily the amount of fresh water… but it’s distribution and sanitation. Donations are needed for Guttering and Water Tanks and Boreholes to increase the water supply.  With two major rainy seasons throughout much of Uganda, guttering is a wonderful opportunity to harvest water.  Guttering is the process of adding gutters and storage containers to existing metal roof structures to capture and store the runoff.  Large plastic, or masonry, storage vessels can often hold between 2,000 and 5,000 gallons of water and provide for over 100 families.  In addition, these structures normally offer thirty year life spans with the proper maintenance.

The other major issue is ground water contamination in rural areas as there is no sewage collection systems.  Donations may also be used to finance and build latrines in these rural areas.
